5 Steps to Handmilled Soap from Scratch

DIY handmilled soap begins with soap flakes, preferably from handmade soap. I prefer castile soap.

You will need:

6-8 oz. Soap Flakes
Additives (distilled water, herbs, oils, scents,)
Mold
Large Pot (I use a 8 Qt. Stainless Steel pot)
Plastic freezer bags (I use 2 sizes: 1 gal. & 1 pt. )
heavy duty work gloves (melted soap is hot)

In 5 quick easy steps you’ll have some fabulous, luxurious, rich, lathering handmilled soap.

Prepare Soap Flakes
Melt Soap Flakes
Scent
Pour
UnMold

Making Handmilled Soap is very easy. First shred some soap to create your soap flakes. Natural soap works best but I’ve heard some people say they’ve used commercial bars like ivory.

1. Shred base soap. I use a large standard vegetable shredder most of the time. Occasionally I use my “craft dedicated” food processor.

Choose your molds. Get Creative. Look at everything around you. Look at disposal containers. A great time to recycle or repurpose.

2. Melt soapflakes by placing them inside the (smaller) plastic bag and then place that bag inside a larger one (1) gallon plastic freezer bag and place them both in a pot of water. Add at least 2-4T. water, aloe, milk or other liquid to the bag of flakes. Bring to a slow boil.

This is where the creativity and experimentation begins. You can add herbs and additional oils at this stage. Experiment. You can also try varying the stage when additives are introduced in the soap like before it’s melted or after melting and just prior to pouring.

Keep a close eye on the soap stirring or mashing the bag occasionally to aide the melting process and to ensure a well mixed batter. The melt time can vary depending on the blend of soapflakes.

You can add additional water to the soapflakes as well. A word of caution. Do not add boiling water to the bag of soapflakes, it may melt a hole in the bag. However, if this should happen. Cleanup as always in soapmaking is pretty easy just a bit messier. You should transfer the soap in a damaged smaller bag to your large outer bag right away. Get a new outer bag and continue the melting process.'

3. Add scent after the soap is completely melted to your desired consistency, it’s time to scent. You can use fragrance or essentials oils. Just keep in mind you are working with a small batch of soap and a little scent can go a long way. Also the scent in soap doesn’t really come through until it has cured a bit. The staying power of the scent can vary with each unique blend or essential. A Good rule of thumb is 1/2 teaspoon per 8oz.

Thirdly, handmilled soap does a fantastic job at retaining scent because it doesn’t have to undergo the harsh saponification process of cold process soapmaking. Ok, so now it’s scented.

4. Pour the soap batter into your pre selected, oiled molds. Snip the corner of one end of the bag of melted soap. This makes it easy to control and pour.

Another great aspect of handmilled soap, is it allows me to use more intricate molds. Many of my molds come from recycled packaging. The shell mold was the lid of a Wendy’s salad container. So it’s yet another way of ‘Greening my Craft’.

Gently drop the mold on the floor or counter to “burp” any air pockets or bubbles. Just like you would with cake batter. Now place the mold in the freezer to set up. The setup time will vary depending on the thickness of the project and consistency of the batter mix usually 1-2 hours for larger molds and a half hour for smaller molds.

Once the soap has set up. You can test this by touch. It should be firm otherwise you might not get a good clean release.

5. Unmold your soap. I usually place fresh unmold soap on wax paper or small cardboard scraps. They are more permeable and the soap doesn’t usually stick.

Here are examples using different molds including commercial soap, candle or recycled molds.

-almost any container has the potential for a great mold. Containers used for food storage, packaging, and preparation are really great candidates. Don’t stop there—look outside the kitchen—think outside the box.

With these 5 easy steps, you’ll be making handmilled soap in no time with ease. It’s the melt and pour for natural handmade cold process soap. You may have noticed the “new” horizontal CSS menu below my header. You probably also noticed that all links lead to Home. That’s because I just added them and I’m currently constructing the pages for those links. I’m working hard to create an easy-to-navigate, content-rich blog. Like fine wine…this blog will get better with time. hehehe

Once they’re totally functional I will be post a status update along with links to the tutorials I used to achieve my results. Stay tuned……

Tech Trauma

Is anyone else out there suffering from information overload? I don’t know about you but I’m having some major Tech Trauma right now. It’s if I went to sleep one night and woke and the whole world got wired and socially networked overnight. While I know that’s not actually true. The changes on the web have evolved at such a phenomenal pace while I was busy living off the web.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not exactly a novice nor do I have technology phobia. I actually love technology almost as much as creating and crafting physically with my hands. Which is why I am so dumbfounded by my lack of social networking savvy. I’m the go-to-tech person in my circle of influence.

At work, I’m the person called on to answer or solve many computer issues, hardware, network or software and I work in a pretty tech wired medical practice. We have networks and programs for viewing radiology reports on the web. We create and maintain EMR’s (electronic medical records) and I’m very comfortable with it all. On a more personal note, I’m the person that family and friends call on come to fix computer issues as well. Again, it can be anything from hardware to software.

Heck, ten years ago I was answering questions, creating websites and graphics for other craft artesian who wanted a web presence but had little to no computer skills. Since then the Web went 2.0 and CSS took over as the prominent web formatting language. CSS, now that’s another whole sad saga. While I can still create a lot of things using html and Photoshop, I have to find pre-designed CSS scripts and templates for most of my web design needs. There is plenty out there but I guess the “control freak” in me want to be able to create my own.

So again, I ask, what happened? Why can’t I grasp all this new social media networking stuff and CSS. I study and strain to gain every ity bity skill and piece of knowledge I currently possess. Why is it so hard for me? I’m not scared. I’m not even put off by having to learn, quite the contrary. I just don’t seem to be learning at that rapid of a speed.

And there’s also this burgeoning feeling of information overload. How do you balance it all. I want to be up on it all and involved in those networks that are topping the the tech charts these days. I want to participate and maneuver these new waters with grace and speed. But right now I’m stumbling around here and there being drawn in like a moth to a flame.

I’m determine to get this stuff. I will be socially networked and super savvy at it—if it kills me. I think organization is the key. What do you think? Are you a savvy social media networker? I’d love to hear from you especially with any useful tips or sites to help me achieve this goal.

Stop and Smell the Roses

Remember to stop and smell the roses…

Life has a way of taking on it’s own momentum. How many times have you said, "I’ll do this or that after this or when this happens..” Only the “this or that” never happens or something totally unexpected comes along seemingly out of nowhere and throws you for a loop. The next thing you know you’re in a tailspin trying to regain your balance and footing. And when the dust settles, you’re scratching your head trying to figure out what to do next. An important reason to make plans because they can keep you focused when the unexpected comes along and it always does because…that’s life.

Plans or goals don’t always have to be followed to the “T”. They should serve as a guide. A plan helps to steer the course, keep the focus on the important things. In this new “digital” age things can sometimes move pretty fast, coming at you 24/7 so sometimes it’s important to slow down. I often need to step away to gain the focus, clarity, and energy needed to forge ahead.

Well I’m currently caught up in one of those unexpected tailspins and these pictures help remind me…

Windows Live Writer – Inserting Video Clip II

Well If you read my previous post you might be thinking I’m a little nuts. I probably am but let me explain the previous post on this subject. When I published the that post the preview of my blog did not show the original “YouTube” Video that I had inserted at the beginning of the post.

But as you can see, Now it’s there. So I suppose I was a bit too hasty and a impatient. It apparently took Blogger a reallllly loooong time to upload it. I’m still not sure how long but I will be testing this feature more and plan to keep a closer eye on the entire process so that I’m can “accurately” report the results. I apologize for any confusion. That said I’m still marveling at the ease and convenience of Windows Live Writer.

Now to find a few more tools like this and my online life will be much more manageable. Any suggestions out there are totally welcomed. I’m on a mission to organize and simplify….

Windows Live Writer – Inserting Video Clips

I've been experimenting with Windows Live Writer, a program mentioned in a previous post and wanted to share some new discoveries as I incorporate it into my online tasks. Today I tried the “Insert – Video” feature. I had to upload the video clip to an online hosting service. I choose YouTube, since I am already registered. It does provide an opportunity to “register” if you are not already a member. It also offers another hosting site for you to “join.” This step was easy, seamless and quick. It worked like a charm in the program “preview.”

I uploaded the post containing this video to my two supported blogs…Blogger & LiveJournal, again easy, seamless and quick. I closed my browser and reopened it to check each blog post. To my amazement and surprise the post in LiveJournal looked great and the embedded video was there and functioning exactly as I’d created it.

However, when I opened my Blog, “Savon Shoppe” hosted by Blogger, the video was missing. Drats! But, all was not lost, I did a quick edit and used Blogger’s “Insert Video” feature while in the “edit post” mode and although the upload is much slower it did finally get uploaded. This edited version has the video clip at the bottom of the post, which I think I like better, but the original version was designed with the video shown above the post. Oh well, six of one, half dozen of another.

What do you think? You can see the original version as first composed at my LiveJournal Blog. I’d love to hear comments from anyone who is using Live Writer or feels it would be a tool for them to try. I’d love to share.

Anyways, all in all this was a minor inconvenience quickly resolved. Plus still being a bit of a novice user, who’s to say that there was something I did or didn’t do that caused this little glitch. So I’m still sold on this fantastic program.

btw...you may have notice the fonts are different in the most recent post, thanks to Live Writer I can experiment more with this, so I am.

Relaxing by the Lake

This is my favorite local spot to relax. It’s a wonderful local lake that is filled with many childhood memories for me. I can sit and watch the waves ripple in and spread out again, smell the breeze, and feel the sunshine warm my skin and spirit.

I’m inspired again, Mother Nature is filled with magical wonders that fuel my inspiration. Watching this family of ducks and others bask in the sunshine reminds me of my own family. My immediate family is a rather small unit compared to our overall large extended family. This means there’s always something, good or bad, going on with and in the family.

We are currently grappling with the effects of aging and the failing health of some of our family matriarchs. It makes this year’s planning of our Annual Family reunion, particularly special and important.

Take a minute to watch a short video of my most recent escape about sunset, a few days ago. My creative spirit is quickly energized by these momentary escapes. Come relax with me, maybe you’ll be energized and inspired by Mother Nature’s unyielding gifts.

Blog & Social Media Publishing Tool

These days most people either need to be or want to be online and I’m no different. I found a tool, Windows Live Writer that helps me manage my online spaces and online time. I’ve just recently began using it so I wanted to share. There are also many plug-ins available to help enhance the “Live Writer” application.

Here’s what I like about “Live Writer”:

I can work off-line
I can publish to multiple sites
I can incorporate pictures & edit them
I can change the fonts
Its easy to install & user friendly

So far there’s only one draw-back, I found. There are some sites that I use that I can’t publish to. I have found a couple of those do allow me to do a copy & paste from the “Live Writer” some even allow the pictures to be included.

The major blogs like: Blogger, WordPress, Live Journal, and such are supported. So all in all I’d say this has proven to be a very useful, time-saving tool.

Last night I was happy to attend NaCole’s Album Release Party at Cafe Bella in Nashville. This young lady is so special to me. She is the daughter of a cousin and she has been a life long best friend to my son, Bryan.

Her new Album is entitled,

“Now NaCole”

Nicole was born to sing and she has been too, all her life. She is also best friends with Kimberly Locke, former American Idol contestant. She and Kimberly both started singing together professionally in their hometown group called “Shades of You.” The group had a loyal local following. Eventually the members began to spread out and pursue their own personal paths. Kimberly went to college and then on to American Idol. NaCole stayed at home, married and began her family but never gave up singing.

Her path to success has been a slow, steady plodding that has allowed her to polish her performance and solidify our vocals. NaCole has a very rich soulful earthy voice that is capable of belting out flawless renditions of some of the music world’s most talented great artist from Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige to Jill Scott. And she can do it acapella. “Now NaCole” is her debut of an original soulful collection showcasing her rich soulful vocals.

It's been a few days since I posted because I've been helping my mom, she's not doing so well these days. She recently retired but unfortunately hasn't really been able to enjoy it much. My mother loves cooking and gardening. While I'm nowhere near the cook or gardener she is I've come to appreciate her talents and passions. The Clematis pictured below is from her yard. It is climbing the trellis beside her mailbox. Mom always says, "Give me my flowers while I can enjoy them." So flowers and plant related items are the gifts she loves most to receive.

2 T. Glycerin

2 T. Grapeseed Oil

1 T. Olive Oil

1 tsp. Jojoba Oil

1/4 tsp. Castor Oil

2 tsp. Sweet Orange Essential Oil

5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

3 drops Jasmine Essential Oil (optional or substitute Ylang Ylang Essential Oil)

Use 1 Tablespoon per bath. Pour oil under running tap to release aroma of essential oils.
This oil also works great as an after shower moisturizer. As after shower moisturizer: blot skin gently after bath or shower then apply oil to slightly dampened skin.

Handmade (Alcohol-free) Liquid Soap

This is a great "soft scrub" for counters, sinks, tubs, shower stalls, etc. You can optionally add an essential oil to scent. It's important to use liquid soap, not detergent, because detergent makes it much harder to rinse. Castile soap is best. It's great to use this and know you're saving money while being kind to your lungs and the planet at the same time! I got this recipe from Karen Logan's book, "Clean House, Clean Planet" (a great book!). You can add a few drops of tea tree oil to make it disinfectant and use it for a toilet bowl cleaner.

Ingredients
1 2/3 cups baking soda
1/2 cup liquid soap
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons white vinegar

Directions
1. Stir liquid soap into baking soda.
2. Add the water, and stir to be as smooth as possible.
3. Add the vinegar and stir again.
4. Pour into a squeeze bottle. (recycle a cleaned ketchup or syrup bottle)
5. Shake well before using, and keep tightly closed between uses.

You can find natural liquid "castile" soap at many health food stores or you could try the Savon Shoppe Liquid soap base. This is a liquid soap concentrate. The base comes with simple diluting instructions and more simple recipes.

Diet Chocolate Fudge Cream Pie Recipe

Ingredients
* 2 sugar free Jello chocolate fudge pudding
* 4 c. skim lowfat milk
* 1 cooked pie crust or possibly home made graham crust
* 10 ounce. walnut pieces
* 4 tbsp. "Sugar free" maple syrup (we used..."Cary" Brand)
* 1 c. Cold Whip

Directions:
Make pudding; beat only 1 minute. Pour into pie crust.
Chill about 1 hour.
Mix Cold Whip, walnuts and maple syrup. Spread over pie.

DIY Bath Tub Smoothie Mix

Over the years, I've experimented with all sorts of bath and skin care recipes. I've written a lot of them down but others are one time fleeting pleasures never to be duplicated.

Browsing old Skin care Journals...I was glad I did write this one down. So today's selection from the Recipe Jukebox is called Bath Tub Smoothie Mix because it has milk. It provides soothing, moisturizing, water softening benefits to your bath and helps sore muscles.

Savon Shoppe Bath Tub
Smoothie Mix

6 oz. Mineral Salts (or Epsom Salts)
2 oz. Powdered Milk
2 oz. Baking soda
1 T. Grapeseed Oil
1T. Glycerin
3 drops Patchouli Essential Oil
10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
3 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil
1 drop Jasmine Essential or Fragrance Oil

In a small bowl (reserved for bath product mixing) mix the dry ingredients: salts, milk, and baking soda. Mix until well blended. Next mix the liquid ingredients: Grapeseed oil, Glycerin, and essential oils. Blend well. Now mix both ingredients until well blended.

Add to nice steaming bath while the water is running and smell the aroma fill your space. Slip yourself in and lay back and relax.

Grapeseed Oil is light, odorless and derived from the seeds of Italian grapes. Its emollient properties impart a rich, silky luster that can sooth away dryness and irritation. Grapeseed oil is suitable for all skin types and has mild astringent properties that prevent it from clogging pores or causing breakouts.
Milk: Did you know that milk can be used to clean and soften your skin and cure dust allergies and dry skin and other irritations?
Glycerin, commonly found in skin care products because it attracts water and helps skin look better.
Epsom salt relaxes your body and muscles, eliminates toxins from the body and reduces the swellings of sprains. You can rub the Epsom salt directly on the skin to make it smooth and silky. Then rinse thoroughly.
Essential oils are chosen for their therapeutic benefit...(these have calming effect and relax sore muscles).

Easy Homemade Ice Cream Recipe

I don't know about you but I love ice cream. One look at my product line and you can tell.
For other ice cream lovers out there, here is an easy recipe to make your own. I got this from Cooks.com search for recipes with and for ice cream

VANILLA ICE CREAM
Printed from COOKS.COM
This is a great way to make ice cream when your gelato machine is out for repair.

What you will need:
2 freezer bags (one has to be smaller then the other one)
In the small freezer bag:
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
200 ml (1 cup) of milk
2 tablespoons sugar
50 g (4 tablespoons) pure cream (18% milk also used in coffee)
In the big freezer bag:
25 ice cubes (if big cubes put 15, if small put 25)
5 tablespoons iodized salt (if normal salt, put in 10 tbsp)

Gather all ingredients.
Put the ingredients in each bag as specified. After, close the small bag, sealing well so that there are no leaks, and put it into the big bag.
Mix the contents of the bags well for at least 10-15 minutes. It should be thick and creamy. If so, then remove contents of inner bag and serve.
If the inner bag's contents are still liquid, put some more ice cubes and salt in the outer back and rub the two of the bags together longer.

Skin Care Ingredients

Why I choose the ingredients I use. When I first learned to make soap I made it for myself. It had to be moisturizing and detergent free due to my skin condition. I’ve remained true to that principle while expanding my line for my customers.

One of the first lessons that stuck with me in discovering solutions to my skin care needs was a basic biology fact: the skin is the body’s largest organ. Who knew? I’m sure I learned this in school as biology and my biology teacher were my high school favorites. But somehow along the way I failed to make the connection to my skin care products. Thanks Mrs. Herron for opening my heart and mind to biology. Who'd guess I'd be making my living and hobby from it.

Everything I put on my skin is absorbed into this large organ. It is either helpful, benign or harmful maybe even toxic. Well…that changed everything for me.
I try to stick with only ingredients that can be food in the kitchen cupboard. In other words, I only use ingredients that I could otherwise ingest. After all I really am in a manner of speaking--through my pores.

Facial Steaming Recipe

Facial Steams are a great way to rid the skin of toxins and open clogged pores which can lead to unwanted breakouts. If you can afford a professional spa treatment that includes a facial, it's money well spent. But if you can't, create your own home-style facial.

Here's one of my recent at-home facial treatments to rive my winter worn skin. A facial steam, exfoliation and moisturizing mask.

I washed my face with a castile soap and then created a facial steam. I used a heat resistant bowl filled with hot boiling water. I added a few drops of essential oils:
Patchouli, Palmrosa and Sweet Orange.
1 drop Patchouli, 5 drops of Palmrosa, 3 drops of Sweet Orange.

Why these essential oils?
Patchouli (Pogostemon patchouli) provides a rejuvenating skin care tonic that helps with wrinkles and inflammation.
Palmarosa (Cymbopogan martini) is also an antiseptic cellular stimulate for wrinkles. It is hydrating for dry skin and also helps with eczema.
Orange (Citrus Aurantium) is a relaxant, cell stimulant that aids dermatitis and wrinkles.
These essential oils also offer uplifting aromatherapy benefits.

I covered my head with towel and leaned my face over this steaming bowl of rejuvenating oils. Being careful not to let the steam escape and not getting too close to avoid burning my face. I stayed under the towel for 10 minute. Taking deep inhalations and breathing out which also helped to relax me. Then I rinsed my face with cool water and while it was still wet I used a homemade scrub to coax the dead skin cells away and applied a moisturizing mask.

Creative Synergy

The creative process is different for everyone. Where does creativity come from? I think creativity comes from deep inside--the heart. I think that is part of what makes a handmade gift so special. Sometimes my creativity stems from necessity and sometimes from unaffordable desires.

When I was about thirteen, I made purses from old worn-out blue jeans. Then in high school I took a Creative Cooking Class and loved it. I learned to decorate cakes and before long I was racking up orders from my mom's nursing co-workers and family members. Believe it or not I still have and use the cake decorating tips purchased for that high school class.

Necessity caused me to become a soapmaker. I was diagnosed with severe eczema and psoriasis (heredity) and could no longer use commercial products. I was devastated. Taking long luxurious baths has always been an inexpensive luxurious way for me to relax, escape and pamper myself. I quickly learned to make my own soap from scratch.

I've learned many new craft skills during my life (most of them self taught). Many times after learning a new craft skill I want to expand it and often incorporate other craft skills to bring a new exciting dimension. This happened to me with soapmaking. I brought my previous cake decorating skills to my new soapmaking skills and starting creating some very fun and interesting soap products.

Maybe you've done this too. If not, stop and think about all the craft skills you have. Perhaps there is some creativity synergy you've overlooked.

Recipes from one of my first cookbooks as a new homemaker, The Better Homes and Gardens “New Cook Book” 1981 edition

Lemon Meringue Pie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1 ½ cups sugar
3 T. cornstarch
3 T. flour, all-purpose
1 ½ cups water
3 eggs
2 T. butter or margarine
½ tsp. lemon peel, finely shredded
1/3 cup lemon juice
1 9” Baked Pastry Shell

In a medium saucepan combine sugar, cornstarch, flour, and dash salt. Gradually stir in water. Cook and stir over medium-high heat till thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat; cook and stir 2 minutes more. Remove from heat. Separate egg yolks from whites; set whites aside for meringue. Beat egg yolks slightly. Stir yolks. Return mixture to saucepan; bring to a gentle boil. Cook and stir 2 minutes more. Remove from heat. Stir in butter or margarine and lemon peel. Gradually stir in lemon juice, mixing well. Pour hot filling into Baked Pastry shell. Spread meringue over hot filling; seal to edge. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes or till meringue is golden. Cool on a wire rack. Cover, chill to store. Makes 8 servings.

Tips for making cream pies
Cream pies must be thoroughly cool before serving, or the filling will be soft. After cooling to room temperature for 4 to 6 hours, cover and refrigerate.
To cover a meringue-topped cream pie, insert several toothpicks halfway into the surface of the meringue to hold wrap away from the pie. Loosely cover with clear plastic wrap and chill to store. (after the meringue is refrigerated, it will be somewhat rubbery.) Dip a knife in water before cutting the pie to prevent the meringue from sticking.

3 egg whites*
½ tsp. vanilla
¼ tsp. cream of tatar
6 T sugar

In a small mixer bowl beat the egg whites, vanilla, and cream of tartar at medium speed on an electric mixer about 1 minute or till soft peaks form.
Gradually add the sugar, about 1 T. at a time, beating at high speed on electric mixer about 4 minutes more or till mixture forms stiff, glossy peaks and sugar is dissolved. Immediately spread meringue over pie, carefully sealing to edge of pastry to prevent shrinkage. Bake as directed in individual pie recipes.

*Note: While the 3-egg-white recipe makes an adequate amount of meringue, you can use the extra egg white from a 4-egg-yolk pie for a more generous meringue. Follow the directions above, except use 4 egg whites, 1 tsp vanilla, ½ tsp cream of tartar and ½ cup sugar. It may be necessary to beat the mixture slightly longer to achieve the proper consistency.

Spring Cleaning…is an inevitable aspect of Spring. I’m cleaning out the Studio. I have a fledging new shop at Etsy and while I’m am still learning the ropes, I’m also revising, revamping the shop and products there as well.

I read a post in an Etsy business forum; by the way, this is a good place for Newbies to visit, anyways, the post was about the importance of good avatars. It made some interesting points. Some avatars just invite you to click them. What do you? I decided to revise my avatar which had been hesitantly designed to coordinate with my shop banner. I made a brand new avatar from one of my shop’s fresh enticing treats. What do you think? Does it make you want to click?

Back to bath treats…I’m on the hunt for some new scent blends for Spring. I’m so excited. “Spring in the Air” so how does it smell? I try to use Essential Oils as much as possible; however, with my savon shoppe collection most products revolve around foods. It’s often difficult to achieve blends that mimic something other than the original plant or fruit essential oil has been extracted from.. Of course there are folks who do specialize in this so, as a mere, self-taught novice, with a partially disabled, often stuffy, rhinitis, nose; I bow to their wisdom. I do sometimes have to use fragrance oils to achieve a desired scent. I’ve become accustomed to the herbal aromas of essential oils which I personally mix for their therapeutic qualities over their scents. However this too can often create some intriguing scents.

I have two beautiful cherry trees growing in my yard. Planted by me when I moved in over ten years ago. They are starting to bloom.--a delightfully eye catching site. I’m inspired and began working on a Cherry Blossom scent using essentials oils. I’ll keep you posted on other upcoming spring scents,

Cloth or Puff...How do you bath?

I'm so excited and happy to see Spring arrive. I want to play and have some fun. Take our survey. Let's play and have some fun with a little Bath Trivia. We'll call it--Bathopathy.

I overheard two coworkers discussing whether shower puffs or scrubbies were better than an "old fashion" wash cloth. They were both fans of the wash cloth. One said she didn't feel clean using shower puffs or scrubbies.

Personally, I prefer the shower puff or scrubbie. I like the gentle exfoliation I get with each use. It also seems to rinse cleaner that cloths (to me). Although I do use cloths for my face. Scrubbies enhance the rich lathering characteristics of make my natural soap best.

Wanna a peek in the Pantry--Let me take you on a tour.
Here are some of our basic ingredients. As you can see they are pretty common and easily assessable. I choose my ingredients for their overall skin nourishing benefits.

First shelf is full of Olive Oil

and more Olive Oil
Olive Oil is a staple around here. Why? Olive Oil is a natural humectant. This means it draws moisture to the skin. It moisturizes the skin without clogging the pores. This allows the skin to breath. Olive oil can go from the kitchen to the bathroom. Olive oil goes into just about every formula I create. It has a hundred and one uses.

Lowfat Cooking Oil
I use it in most of my cooking.
Bath Oil
I sometimes add a tablespoon to the bath for a quick easy skin softener.
After Shower Moisturizer I use it neat--when I jump out of the shower. While I’m still wet I douse little puddles in my hand and smooth it over my entire wet body, then a gentle towel off. I hardly ever use lotion. When I have time and want an extra special treat I add some nourishing essential oils to get more of a boost to my skin and spirit. Oooh la la…talk about silky smooth skin.
Hair Moisturizer It makes a great hot oil treatment. Heat a few ounces by sitting it in hot water a few minutes. Then generously apply to scalp--a squeeze bottle works best for this. Put on a shower cap. And let it sit for 15-30 minutes. Get an added boost by wrapping a warm towel over shower cap or sitting under a dryer. Add some Rosemary or Sage essentials--what a treat for dry brittle hair.
Superior Soapmaking Oil I use it as the base oil in most of my soaps. It adds a nice velvety lather with small slow bubbles to soap. And it makes a pretty hard long last bar. It's excellent for sensitive skin. It gives it what it needs and enhances its function.

Now you see why I have so much Olive Oil. Yes, around here Olive is King! Come back again for another peek in the pantry.

In many ways crafting is intrinsically green. It allows someone to take simple items and put them together in unique ways to create something useful and beautiful by hand. When I think of green I think hands, hearts, and earth all working in a synergistic fashion providing an opportunity for all to shine. It’s balance and harmony. Doesn’t that sound creative.
I am creative and try to embrace eco-friendly aspects into my crafting. Some of my most creative projects are the results of repurposing or recycling.

I’m a soap maker so I feel I contribute greatly to a more eco-friendly lifestyle. I make my own soap free of harmful synthetic detergents. I make other things too and use recycled or natural materials.

Yes, I'm going green...my way.

Why my Etsy Savon Shoppe is perfect for me...

I’m a crafter who loves to experiment. I love trying new techniques and recipes. Etsy’s business model allows me to do this with much more ease. It fits perfectly into my current life and scheduling situations. I get to experiment in small ways without investing tons of money in new product or generating huge amounts of inventory that just sits on the shelf.

If a family crises arises…they always do. I can comfortably take a break and address it without worrying about creating inventory for potential sells because I’ve marketed something that I have no proven sells for yet must be prepared to meet should my marketing efforts payoff. This can happen when your growing a small business. The need to keep inventory for customers balanced with the cash flow required for raw materials. Here's one of my personal examples, QVC.

I had the opportunity to market my products on QVC once and it was an honor and a learning experience. Before the product was it accepted it had to meet their stringent QC (quality control) standards. It did and I was very proud. Then I had to commit to a preset amount of ready inventory before I went on. Why because it would not be good business for QVC to advertise a product for which they could not deliver. It took months to bring the whole thing together but we did it. And in the process I learned a lot. A lot about business, myself, and my then partner. All good things to know. The biggest thing I realized was that I did not want to be in the manufacturing business. It robbed me of my creative joy although not my will. I needed a more personalized creative business model. Enter Etsy!

I can make one-sy and two-sy…put them on the shelf in Etsy and see what the response is. It’s a great barometer for testing my product selection. I can offer one of kind unique products--even customized. If something turns out to be a hit. I know I can take it to the next level and increase my inventory and marketing efforts knowing the items will move.

If I had really understood Etsy’s value initially I would not have designed a website or pay for hosting. I would have just registered the domain name. That way it would be available whenever I needed. I knew the concept “if you build it, they will come” did not apply to websites. I knew I would have to market it to drive traffic to it and then hope that traffic produces sales.

The beauty of Etsy is there is already a captive audience.
Buyers and sellers who WANT qaulity handmade merchandise.
A major hurdle is already overcome versus
a “stand alone” “start-up” independent website that has to
build traffic, reputation, and product confidence in slow sparodic
traffic.
It can be done but it’s a very slow uninspiring process.
The sparkling gem in the beauty of Etsy is--it's inspiring.
Etsy is an inspiring community on the web.

This will be a continuation series article because there’s just so much about Etsy that I love, want to learn and share. As a craft artisian and entrepreneur I believe in sharing knowledge. It expands the teacher as well as all those it touches.

That’s what this blog is really all about. So I won’t try to write it all in one sitting. I’m still working on finding balance in my work and creative life. It takes time for me to transition from working, to creating, to writing. I want to be authentic and timely with this blog. So right now, upfront, I’m giving notice, here in the beginning, the consistency of postings may be sporadic but always useful. I want to let the direction of the blog be guided by my experiences and the needs I see. Knowing that I am not alone, I’m sure others will find the information useful too.

I do want to grow a successful business but enjoying the ride is an important part of that.

Basic Skin Care Regime

Basic Skin Care Regime(s)

Your personal skincare regime will depend on your specific skin type (normal, dry, oily, or combination)

Normal

Wash with a mild cleanser
apply toner (alcohol-free) if desired
Moisturize

Exfoliate once or twice a week.

Dry

Wash with ultra mild cleanser (cold creams are great for removing dirt)
Moisturize with ultra rich moisturizing creams or lotions (skip the toning).

Use ultra mild exfoliating scrub once a week. Use a moisturizing mask once or twice a week.

Oily

Wash with cleansers specified for oily skin (antibacterial)
Use a toner or astringent
Apply ultra light nonpore-clogging moisturizer

Exfoliate once a week. Avoid harsh scrubs on acne breakouts. Use a mask for oily skin once or twice a week. Give yourself a good facial steam once a twice a week to open and unclog pores.

Combination

Wash with mild cleanser
Apply toner or astringent on oily zones
Apply moisturizer

Exfoliate once or twice a week. Use an appropriate facial mask once or twice a week.

These regimes should be followed twice daily. In the mornining and again night (or after your workday) are best. Always use appropriate level sunscreen when applicable.

Never go to bed with your makeup on!

The Importance of a Good Skin Care Regime

I’m almost 50 and I’m please to say that when people find out my age they’re often quite surprised and tell me that I don’t look it. I’m often complimented on my skin, as well. I’ve had strangers ask me what my secret is. I think my youthful appearance is partly due to the appearance of my skin. While I’m sure both of these are due in part to genetics, I firmly believe the other part, my secret, is a good skin care regime. There is no substitute for following a good skin care regime. I’ve always paid close attention to my skin and tried to pamper it. As a child, I was frequently teased by my aunt for my obsessive tendency to slather on lotion--Jergen’s.

It’s never too late to develop and institute good skin care habits but I believe the earlier in life you start the more thankful you’ll be later in life. Good skin is nothing more than healthy skin and healthy skin definitely gives you a more youthful appearance.

A good skin care regime doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult to maintain. Our skin is our body’s largest organ. Its is our mantle of defense from the outside environment. In order to function properly and maintain a healthy glow and it’s natural elasticity, it needs to moisturized. Regardless of your skin type: dry, normal, or oily it still need to be properly moisturized. For this reason, there is not a one-size fits all product. Your skin type simple determines the type of moisturizer you should be using. We can have a combination skin type and even normal skin can experience changes with the seasons or the environment. Pay attention so that you can adjust and adapt your regime to fit these changes.

In my next post, I’ll cover a few basics practices that should be incorporated into your personal skin care regime and later will post some special practices for specific skin types and conditions. Until then remember there is no substitute for a good skin care regime and it’s never too late to began.

3 Simple Herbal Acne Remedies

Here are a few simple solutions for a few common skin irritations:

1. Cologate toothpaste (plain)
Is great for sudden pimple flareup. Rub a little dab right on the pimple to take the redness and swelling away. Allow it to stay for 15-20 minutes. Then wash, rinse, and moisturize as normal. I have even slept with it on overnight without causing any damage.

2. Tea Tree Essential Oil.
Can be used to get rid of a patch of acne in hurry. Apply directly to the affected area . Use it neat (undiluted). Tea Tree Oil is one of two essential oils that is safe to apply directly to your skin undiluted (straight from the bottle). Your skin will quickly absorb it so do not rinse off. Apply whatever additional moisturizer and/or makeup that you normally would use right over the application. Try this for 2-3 days and that nasty little patch will disappear in no time.

3. Lavender Essential Oil.
Is the other essential oil that is safe to use undiluted. It is good to use on burns, insect bites and is safe for all skin types.

These three items are staples in my medicine cabinet.

Simple Facial Scrubs

Why use facial scrubs? Scrubs are a simple way to exfoliate dead skin cells. Exfoliation exposes the fresh new healthy layer of skin underneath giving your skin a natural healthy glow.

You don't have to buy expensive fancy products. You probably have ingredients to do the job efficiently already in the kitchen cupboard. My favorite inexpensive quick scrub is sugar. Yes-- plain white granulated sugar.

Mix a teaspoon or so of sugar with a small squirt of your favorite liquid soap for a quick foamy facial scrub. Rub the mixture in a gentle circular motion for a few seconds, rinse well with warm or tepid water followed by a few splashes of cool to cold water to close the pores. Next apply your favorite moisturizer. I sometimes use a cosmetic sponge to rub my scrubs in but your fingers will work just as well.

For dry skin substitute the liquid soap with honey instead. For sensitive irritated skin substitute the sugar with ground oatmeal or use mixture of half sugar and half oatmeal.

Caution: I would not use table salt. Although there a many scrubs made with salts (mostly mineral salts), they are more appropriate for body scrubs. Salt, particularly table salt, tends to be more drying and the crystal formation of salt grains can be extremely abrasive on facial skin.

3 Benefits of Natural Handmade Soap

Our skin is the body's largest organ. It is our outer mantle of defense. It must be healthy to do it's job properly. Healthy skin needs to breathe and retain a sufficient level of moisture for a healthy glow and elasticity.

1. Detergent-Free. Most commercial soaps contain synthethic detergents and preservatives. These chemicals can be irritants; are usually very drying; and strip the skin of its natural oils. Detergents and synthethic fragrances are among the most common skin irritants.

Ever read the ingredients on the label of a commerically produced soap? How many of them could you pronounce? Did you know that many of these ingredients are unnecessary for cleansing purposes? Many of the ingredients are for aesthetic purposes only and others are added only to extend the shelf life. Our skin does not discriminate--it absorbs them all.

2. Mild & Moisturizing. Most homemade soaps are made with various blends of skin nourishing oils. Most are also superfatted which means they are formulated with extra oils to provide additional moisturizing benefits. Many handmade soaps are mild enough for babies, especially, castile soaps. Genuine castile soap is 100% Olive Oil. Some soapmakers add 20-50% coconut or palm oil to enhance the lathering quality. Castile soaps made from 100% Olive Oil while extremely mild and moisturizing generally produce a slow, stingy lather of a slight "slimmy-like" consistency. Olive oil is a natural humectant attracting and holding moisturize close to the skin without clogging the pores

3. DIY friendly. You can make your own soap using simple ingredients from your kitchen just like our grandparents did. But now due to a few modern inventions and improvements we can get consistent, predictable results. Many of the ingredients in commercially produced soaps can clog our pores.

Many handmade soaps have a naturally long shelf life without any synthethic preservatives. I recently pulled out a 6 year old pail of handmade soaps from my outdoor storage building (not climate controlled) and most were still useable and even had some remaining scent. I use a natural preservative in my soap--Grapefruit Seed Extract which has other skin nourishing benefits. Handmade soaps will usually last longer during the use of the bar, as well. My typical 3.5 oz. bars last about month with regular daily use and I love to shower and bath. This makes them very economical.

As for the aesthetics, to use a trite cliche, "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder." Personally I believe handmade soaps are much prettier and creative than any commercial bar. You can design a custom soap recipe for your specific skin care needs.

I began my own soapmaking adventures 12 years ago because of severe skin problems and the benefits were immediately noticeable. I could never go back to commercially produce soaps.
